CDC Injury Center- Division of Violence Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is pleased to announce an employment opportunity for a behavioral scientist in the Division of Violence Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.  The Division supports both intramural and extramural research and projects to prevent violence.  Activities focus on the primary prevention of violence through the public health approach: defining the problem, identifying risk and protective factors, developing and testing prevention strategies, and assuring widespread adoption of prevention principles and strategies.  

The specific opportunity is within the Program Implementation and Dissemination Branch (PIDB) of the Division of Violence Prevention, which is seeking a PhD-level scientist with a social or behavioral science background to serve as a Senior Service Fellow on the Research, Synthesis, and Application Team (RSA).  The PIDB is oriented towards researching, designing, and implementing violence prevention strategies from a public health perspective across all levels of the social ecological model.  The branch addresses primary prevention of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, youth violence, child maltreatment, and suicide.

The work of the RSA Team is focused on four main areas:
1.    Dissemination/Implementation research/evaluation of intervention strategies and programs;
2.    Synthesis and translation of scientific knowledge to practice;
3.    Capacity-building development; and
4.    Program evaluation, including evaluation research and program evaluation.
Position Description 

Qualifications: A PhD-level Social/Behavioral/Health Scientist with expertise to employ dissemination/implementation research, synthesis and translation activities, capacity building guidance, and program evaluation of violence prevention strategies, programs, and policies through independent investigation, advice, and consultation to others. 

Duties: The incumbent will focus on providing technical assistance and consultation to grantees implementing violence prevention programmatic activities to improve their capacity for evaluation and program improvement, especially in the prevention of youth violence and sexual violence.  Knowledge or experience in synthesizing, translating, and disseminating violence prevention strategies is highly desirable.  Interest or knowledge in dissemination/implementation research/evaluation is extremely advantageous.  Only applicants with experience in evaluation and research at the community/societal-level will be considered. Because excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills are required, applicants will be required to make a formal verbal presentation as part of the interview process.

The Criminal Justice Program at Bowling Green State University invites applications for a one-year temporary position (non-tenure track) beginning August 2009.

This position is in support of both the undergraduate and graduate programs in Criminal Justice and will bridge a need until a full search for tenure track faculty can be undertaken (search expected fall term). The individual selected for the position will be eligible to apply for any tenure track positions that come available.The successful candidate will be expected to teach classes and participate in course advising. Classes typically have a maximum of 30 students. Substantive area in criminal justice is open, although candidates capable of teaching law enforcement and/or statistics are particularly welcome. Research interests can be in any substantive area of criminal justice.

Preference will be given to candidates who are either ABD or hold a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice/Criminology or a closely related field. Those holding only a J.D. degree will not be considered.

The Program:

The Criminal Justice Program at BGSU offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Criminal Justice. The department has a normal complement of eight tenure track faculty serving roughly 200 undergraduate and 15 graduate students. Bowling Green is a residential, comprehensive state supported university with roughly 17,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
