Awards and Paper Competition

We would like to remind everyone of the DWC paper competition for ASC 2009. This is a great way for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their work. Please see competition details on the DWC’s website. Submissions should be sent to Gwen Hunnicutt: ghunnicu@uncg.edu by August 31, 2009.

It is also time for nominations for internal DWC awards.  Nominations are requested for the following Division on Women and Crime awards:

Distinguished Scholar Award which recognizes outstanding contributions to the field of women and crime by an established scholar.  The contributions may consist of a single outstanding book or work, a series of theoretical or research contributions, or the accumulated contributions of an established scholar. Eligibility includes scholars who have held a Ph.D. for eight or more years.

New Scholar Award which recognizes the achievements of scholars who show outstanding merit at the beginnings of their careers.  Outstanding merit may be based on a single book or work, including dissertation or a series of theoretical or research contributions to the area of women and crime. Eligibility includes scholars who held a Ph.D. for less than eight years.

Lifetime Achievement Award which recognizes scholars upon retirement.  We inaugurated this award on our 20th Anniversary, 2004.  Scholars receiving this award should have an established career advancing the goals and work of the Division on Women and Crime.

CoraMae Richey Mann “Inconvenient Woman of the Year” Award recognizes the scholar/activist who has participated in publicly promoting the ideals of gender equality and women’s rights throughout society, particularly as it relates to gender and crime issues.  This award will be granted on an ad hoc basis.  Nominations should include specific documentation of public service (news articles, etc) and should describe in detail how this person’s activism has raised awareness and interest in the issues that concern the Division on Women and Crime.  This award was inaugurated in honor of our 20th Anniversary in 2004.

The Saltzman Award for Contributions to Practice recognizes a criminologist whose professional accomplishments have increased the quality of justice and the level of safety for women. The Saltzman Award need not be given every year. It is available to honor unique achievements combining scholarship, persuasion, activism and commitment, particularly work that has made a deep impact on the quality of justice for women, as well as a wide impact (interdisciplinary, international, or cross-cultural).

The Graduate Scholar Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of graduate students to the field women and crime, both in their published work and their service to the Division of Women & Crime.  Outstanding contributions may include single or multiple published works that compliment the mission of the DWC, and significant work within the Division, including serving as committee members, committee chairs, or executive board members.  Preference will be given to those candidates who have provided exceptional service to the DWC.  Eligibility includes scholars who are still enrolled in an M.A. or Ph.D. program at the time of their nomination.

Submission Information

The nominees are evaluated by the awards committee based on their scholarly work, their commitment to women crime as a research discipline, and their commitment to women in crime as advocates, particularly in terms of dedication to the Division on Women and Crime.  In submitting your nomination, please provide the following supporting materials:  a letter identifying the award for which you are nominating the individual and evaluating a nominee’s contribution and its relevance to the award, the nominee’s c.v. REGINA E. BRISGONE has been awarded her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and has accepted a tenure-track position to start August 17 at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, in the Department of Criminal Justice. The DWC wishes both of you the very best!

CATHY MCDANIELS and JOANNE BELKNAP won the Best Article of 2008 in the journal Violence Against Women for their article "The Extensive Sexual Violation and Sexual Abuse Histories of Incarcerated Women.” Violence Against Women, 14(10):1090-1127. Congrats ladies!

Another talented DWC member, SUSAN SHARP, has been awarded the L. J. Presidential Professorship, an endowed professorship, at the University of Oklahoma. What an honor, Susan!

We would also like to congratulate JILL McCORKEL– she has just received a promotion to associate professor at Villanova and TENURE!

We would like to join MINDY S. BRADLEY-ENGEN in announcing her new book, Bradley-Engen, Mindy S. 2009. Naked Lives: Inside the Worlds of Exotic Dance. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press (SUNY).

We would also like to make known that MOLLY DRAGIEWICZ and WALTER DeKESEREDY recently published two studies conducted in support of The Ontario Women’s Directorate for Transforming our Communities: Report from the Domestic Violence Advisory Council for the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues. The first study, Experiences of Abused Women in the Family Courts in Eight Regions in Ontario, is a mixed methods study which documents some of the critical issues battered mothers face when they attempt to leave their abusers. While the second, Shifting Public Policy Direction: Gender-Focused versus Bi-Directional Intimate Partner Violence, debunks the claim that women are as violent as men in intimate relationships and explains the history and context of discourses on gendered violence in Canadian policy.

In addition, WALTER DeKESEREDY has a new book coming out, DeKeseredy, W.S., & Schwartz, M.D. (2009) Dangerous Exits: Escaping Abusive Relationships in Rural America. New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press.

ROSALYN MURASKIN has lots of news to share. She is currently working on the Fifth Edition of It's a Crime: Women and Justice for Prentice Hall, due out with a copyright date of 2011 but available late 2010. In addition, as the Chair of the Affirmative Action Committee for ACJS, Rosalyn is looking for panelists for workshops on Affirmative Action for San Diego, February 2010.  The Department of Criminal Justice at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University is rejoining the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, and as Director of the Long Island Women's Institute, Rosalyn’s work will now be in this College. She would like to extend an open invitation to members of the DWC who are in the Northeast to come speak on campus concerning issues of Gender and Minorities.  If you are interested please email her at Roslyn.Muraskin@liu.edu.
