Hello Fellow DWC Members,

Below is the collected news from a variety of DWC members, showing what an amazing organization we have! Please keep sending updates to tricha11@gmail.com.

Best Regards,

Tara Richards

First, join us in congratulating Joanne Belknap, President-Elect of ASC! Joanne will serve as the 6th female president of ASC. Importantly, the 2013-2014 term will mark the first term that ASC has elected women to both the Presidential and Vice-Presidential positions (Karen Heimer) – ever! Also, Lauren Krivo and Karen Parker were elected to the Executive Committee of ASC.  Congrats to each of you and thank you for your service to our organization and discipline.

Please also join us in congratulating several DWC members on their receipt of tenure and/or promotion!

Joanne Kauffman just received tenure and promoted to Associate Professor at the University of Albany, SUNY.

Hillary Potter received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Judith Ryder was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor at St. John’s University.

Molly Dragiewicz has received tenure and promotion to Associate Professor at University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

Natalie Sokoloff is staying very busy. Natalie has been invited to serve on a committee of six scholars from Finland, Israel, Ireland, and the United Kingdom to assist the University of Austria in their decision regarding whether to proceed with a new PhD program in Gender Violence and Agency in International Context. In addition, Natalie, along with Anika Fontaine, is the proud chair of a panel honoring the late Roslyn Muraskin where she will deliver a paper on “Structural Barriers to Higher Education for People Coming out of Prison.”  She is also co-teaching an Inside/Out class with Barbara Roswell at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women through Goucher College in Baltimore, MD. Also, for the Eastern Sociological Society March 2013 meeting, Natalie is organizing an “Author Meets Critics” panel for Beth Richie’s new book, Arrested Justice: Black Women, Violence, and America’s Prison Nation.

Marjorie Zatz is now the Director of the Law and Social Sciences Program at the National Science Foundation. Congratulations!

The Outreach Committee is requesting book donations for the new member raffle.  If you have recently authored a book, please consider donating a copy for the DWC. You can mail the books early or drop them off at the table in Chicago. Please remember that the chance to win a book written by one of our accomplished members is a great incentive for new members. We can all help increase membership in the DWC by encouraging our colleagues and students to join! (Just a reminder that to qualify for the new member book raffle members must join on site at the conference) We will also be sending out the volunteer sheet for the table. It is the visibility of all members at the table, which makes outreach such a success for the DWC!

We would also like to announce several new publications:

Westervelt, Saundra D. and Kimberly J. Cook. In press (2012). Life After Death Row: Exonerees Search for Community and Identity. Rutgers University Press. Please consider the “Authors Meets Critics” session at ASC on Saturday morning, 8:30 in the Hilton Spire Parlor, 6th Floor.  Critics include Susan Sharp, Richard Leo, and Marvin Zalman.

Natalie Sokoloff has written a paper on Women’s incarceration in US as well as in Maryland. She is willing to disseminate this to anyone who has interest – just let her know!

Walter DeKeseredy and Molly Dragiewicz are co-editing a critical criminological anthology for Routledge’s book series titled Critical Concepts in Criminology. It will include 80 – 100 previously published articles and book chapters. It is designed to include the “greatest hits” of critical criminology. Please send any suggestions to Walter and Molly at walter.dekeseredy@uoit.ca and molly.dragiewicz@uoit.ca.
