In this edition, Shelly Clevenger (ISU) presents an innovative active learning exercise designed so that students can “step into a victim’s shoes” as she explains below:

In my courses, when we discuss Victim Impact Statements, I think that it helps to have students be creative and write their own rather than just see examples through videos or readings. I provide scenarios of crimes and require students to write their statement as a victim. They also must read their statement to the “court.” I have used this activity for a number of years and it has been very successful in fostering empathy for victims.
