Drake University is pleased to announce a faculty position in our interdisciplinary Law, Politics, and Society Program. This position will focus on social justice, leadership, and civic engagement. We seek an excellent teacher and active scholar to offer courses contributing to the program in ways that complement the university-wide mission of educating ethical and self-reflective global citizens and effective leaders. Area of focus and methods are open – but we hope to attract legal studies scholars working on issues of cause lawyering, public interest litigation, social movement activism, democratic participation, and leadership from core disciplinary perspectives as diverse as sociology, journalism, business, political science, and social work. Drake University values interdisciplinary research and teaching; we seek candidates committed to innovative pedagogy, who use experiential, collaborative, and service learning techniques to facilitate student learning, and contribute to a vibrant community both on- and off-campus. The Gallatin School of Individualized Study invites scholars and/or practitioners in the fields of international human rights and law, to apply for a full-time teaching position to commence on September 1, 2010. The position is a non-tenure track but renewable contract line at an assistant or associate level, and includes all the rights of full-time faculty. We seek candidates interested in joining an interdisciplinary undergraduate college that emphasizes scholarship, teaching, experimental approaches, and intensive mentoring of students pursuing individualized paths of study. Depending on experience and interest, some teaching at the MA level may also be a part of the position.

The ideal candidate will have a J.D. or Ph.D., scholarly research focused in the fields of human rights or international law, and some practical experience, whether in formal international organizations, in NGO’s, in a law firm or in local organizing. We look for a candidate with a theoretical and scholarly approach to the practice or advocacy of human rights, who can teach courses providing perspective on the current practice of human rights law or the politics associated with international law and human rights.

The ideal candidate would build bridges to disciplines like political theory or political science, sociology or anthropology, philosophy or law. The candidate will have a significant role in shaping how these courses will relate to the non-classroom learning experiences that our students seek in the field of human rights, and in developing the ways in which this new position will advance the academic and outreach aims of the School.

Qualifications: Ph.D or J.D., practical legal or other experience involving Human Rights; a strong record of research or writing. Teaching experience at the university level desirable.

PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY

Department of Sociology and Crime, Law and Justice invites applications for an advanced assistant or associate professor in Criminology or Sociology with expertise in terrorism and one or more areas of political violence, religious violence, social movements, political movements or religious movements for appointment beginning in Fall 2010.  The successful candidate will also work at Penn State's International Center for the Study of Terrorism, with responsibilities including research support on current and new grants related to terrorism, as well as assisting in the development of new projects and proposals. Faculty positions at Penn State involve substantial research support; in addition, junior positions offer significant release time.
Position: Advanced Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (Salary – negotiable)
Qualifications: Candidates should have a substantial research record, demonstrated potential to win external funding, and good teaching credentials. The successful candidate will display a mastery of the terrorism studies literature, as well as a mastery of rigorous empirical research methods.  Candidates must have their Ph.D. in hand by Fall 2010.
